HNI's trade advocacy has centered on maintaining open and predictable North American trade under USMCA, protecting the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, and ensuring that trade remedies are applied in ways that strengthen-not inadvertently undermine-domestic production. We have supported targeted enforcement against unfair trade practices while emphasizing the need for tailored exclusions and relief mechanisms under authorities such as Sections 301 and 232 when critical manufacturing inputs are not available from U.S. sources in sufficient quantity or quality. Our overarching message has been that trade policy should promote resilient supply chains, support American jobs and investment, and avoid unnecessary cost burdens on U.S. manufacturers and consumers.

HNI's federal procurement advocacy has focused on maintaining the current competitive procurement structure within the Department of Defense and opposing efforts to expand Federal Prison Industries' mandatory sourcing authorities. We have encouraged policymakers to preserve agency flexibility to procure products that best meet mission requirements while supporting domestic manufacturers that invest in U.S. jobs, facilities, and supply chains. Our overarching message has been that a competitive procurement system strengthens the domestic industrial base, protects taxpayer value, and delivers the best outcomes for federal agencies and servicemembers.
